Heat Pump Repair Questions

Every question we get asked about heat pump repair, answered straight.

Questions

How It Works

Can a heat pump be repaired, or does it always need replacement?

Most faults, failed capacitors, reversing valve issues, airflow problems, and minor refrigerant leaks, are repairable. Replacement becomes the better option when the compressor has failed on an older system or when the repair cost approaches the value of a new unit. You get a written assessment either way.

Is ice on the outdoor unit always a sign something is broken?

Not always. Light frost during a defrost cycle is normal. Heavy or repeated icing points to an airflow restriction, a refrigerant fault, or a defrost board problem. Aurora cold snaps make this more common, and leaving it unaddressed can damage the compressor.

Can I keep resetting the system and wait?

A reset may clear a minor control glitch once. Repeated shutdowns, persistent icing, or weak heating usually mean a real fault is present. Waiting risks the compressor overheating or a refrigerant leak worsening, both of which turn a straightforward repair into a much larger one.

What gets checked during a heat pump repair visit?

The technician checks thermostat response, supply voltage, refrigerant pressure on both high and low sides, airflow through the indoor coil, fan motor amperage, capacitor voltage, and the defrost cycle. The goal is to confirm the root cause before ordering any parts.

Arrange a Heat Pump Assessment

We arrange a written, itemised estimate before any work is booked, no commitment required to get the details.
